Designing a Logo

The Logo

Okay, for a long time now I have been thinking about how to reclaim the use of my full name. My parents brought their cultures together in interesting ways, making decisions to compromise or preserve the Korean and Indian identities as they found a way to puzzle the pieces together. The first decision that they made, was my name. My older brother was given an Indian name and my mother took a turn to give me a Korean name. So with first names, my parents are 1-1 a tie. We didn’t learn Korean or Hindi, 0-0, also a tie. A shitty artifact of Western and English formalities is the establishment of a name hierarchy. First Name > Last Name > Middle Name. God forbid you have more than 3. This led me to grow up as Jinsu Elhance, leaving out the equal, albeit short, middle piece; Yi. So, this website holds my full name, and I’m introducing myself in complete nomenclature as I go out into the world.

The logo is an abstraction of my initials. Each letter is discoverable in the curves and it follows a similar flow to my signature. They are part of a mirrored shape with each informing the full form as much as the other. The logo is aligned with the idea that each part of my name is an important part of my story.
